Blue Mountain Heart to Heart was founded in 1985 by sixteen people concerned at the lack of resources for people for people who were dying of AIDS. The incredible level of stigma drove people out of their communities to seek respite so they wouldn’t have their families ostracized. Our volunteers cared for many from the Tri-Cities and neighboring counties. Dr. Dick Simon took on the large task of helping our clients, and when AZT arrived on the market, it felt initially like a miracle.
BMHTH staff, volunteers, and partner organizations cared for hundreds of people in those early years. And that work set us on a course to always advocate and care for people who are marginalized because of their diagnosis. Supporting people who are living with HIV/AIDS will always be a critical program for us and an important part of our legacy.
